This Chair Took Adam Savage Two Years To Make! (Trypophobia Warning)

Adam Savage spent almost two years transforming a classic Emeco Navy Chair—an iconic, welded-aluminum seat designed for WWII—into the lightest version he could imagine. By drilling thousands of precisely laid-out holes, he set out to see just how much weight he could shave off, only to discover that the simple idea was way more complex in practice.

What began as a fun shop experiment turned into a meticulous engineering puzzle, complete with unexpected fabrication challenges and careful pattern planning. In true Savage fashion, the project became a deep dive into material limits, maker creativity, and the satisfaction of extreme weight reduction.
